Kuala Lumpur or KL as it’s affectionately known is the nation’s capital and is the starting off point for discovering the country. Many stay just a night before heading off but stay longer and you’ll discover a thriving and cosmopolitan city with excellent restaurants, smart shopping malls, excellent public transport and plenty of pleasant surprises.

Away from Kuala Lumpur you’ll find stunning beaches and island resorts that cater for all tastes and budgets. Lively Penang and the smaller, less busy Langkawi are the two favourites or, quieter still, is the scenic east coast region around Kuantan, with fine beaches facing the South China Sea. Inland the cooler Cameron Highlands is perfect for hill walking or relaxing.

Malaysia is ideal for touring, whether with others or independently in your own air conditioned car. It is the only destination in the region where we recommend a self drive holiday. The infrastructure is good with plentiful road signs and almost everyone speaks English. They drive on the left too!

Try not to miss Borneo with its fantastically beautiful national parks, profuse wildlife and gentle people. Easily accessed from Kuala Lumpur, it can be combined into any Far East holiday.
