Bagan | Sagaing Hills | Mandalay
A vital artery for trade going back centuries, the Irrawaddy runs through a land untouched by tourists for a generation. Today a cruise between Bagan and Mandalay provides the perfect way to explore central Burma as you glide past golden temples, unspoilt villages and riverside forests.
Day 1 - Bagan
On arrival into Bagan, transfer to your luxury cruise ship and settle into your suite. The Sanctuary Ananda blends traditional Burmese with contemporary design and has just 21 suites, all with a balcony to enjoy the river views. After lunch, go ashore to visit the Kayminga pagoda built in a variety of styles showing how architecture evolved over the centuries. Continue on to Ananda Temple which was completed in 1091 AD and regarded as one of the country's most beautiful. Finish the day enjoying a sunset over the Bagan plains.
Day 2 - Bagan
Start the day watching the sun rise in a hot air balloon (extra cost) or alternatively visit the bustling Nyaung U market, where farmers meet to buy and sell everything from fruit to lacquerware. Continue to the golden Shwezigon Pagoda which was the first major monument to be built in in the Burmese style and said to contain relics of Gautama Buddha. Return to the ship to sail upstream towards Sagaing, relaxing in your suite or the lounge as you pass villages and distant pagodas gracing the hills. Enjoy the onboard activities which include cultural demonstration, a back of house tour and an informative talk on Burmese history.
Day 3 - Mandalay
Spend the morning enjoying the passing countryside or taking part in a cooking class with the chef, before arriving beside the pagoda-sprinkled Sagaing Hills. An important religious and monastic centre, the area is home to some 554 monasteries and 6,000 monks. There is time to visit some of these before taking in the spectacular views from the Soon U Ponya Shin Pagoda on top of the hill. Before returning to the ship, visit often pictured U Bein Bridge, a long teak structure that snakes across the lake. Tonight a farewell dinner will be served onboard followed by a local cultural performance.
Day 4 - Mandalay
If leaving on a later flight, a tour of Mandalay will be taken visiting the highly revered Mahamuni Pagoda, the beautiful teak monastry of Shwenandaw and Kuthodaw.
